The Paradox of Human Existence: When Identity Becomes Capital

A creator wakes up every day and checks analytics before breakfast—not out of curiosity, but out of necessity. This is no longer just a habit; it reflects how work itself has been restructured under digital platforms. Visibility becomes a condition of survival, turning self-monitoring into an economic routine.

In this sense, the creator becomes the labor. The question is no longer whether creators choose to monitor themselves, but why such monitoring has become necessary to remain economically visible. Personal branding and influencer culture, often framed as empowerment, reveal a new form of exploitation. Under platform capitalism, creators are structurally driven to transfer not only their labor, but their identities and very existence into capital. What emerges is a deeper stage of alienation—one in which human essence itself begins to erode.

Servants of the Algorithm

Under platform capitalism, algorithms no longer merely recommend content—they govern it. They determine who gets seen, who gets paid, and who fades into irrelevance. In doing so, they transform creators into marketable products, forcing them to perpetually chase relevance in order to survive.

To remain economically viable, creators must become legible to algorithms—optimized, trend-aligned, and metric-friendly. This pressure extends far beyond physical labor. It infiltrates creativity, attention, and even cognition, where every idea, post, or pause becomes raw material for algorithmic judgment and commodification.

As a result, creativity itself becomes subject to algorithmic evaluation. When creative output fails to align with platform metrics or rapidly shifting demands, a creator’s value can collapse overnight. Platforms evolve unpredictably, constantly updating their rules and prioritizing new signals—shares over likes, watch time over views. This forces continuous adaptation: studying patterns, anticipating changes, and conforming to trends. Value, in turn, becomes unstable and externally determined, dictated not by intrinsic merit but by opaque systems.

Recent reports reinforce this condition. According to the Digital Dept. 2026 Creator Marketing Report, over half of creators cite algorithm unpredictability as their primary challenge. At the same time, income distribution remains highly uneven: only a small percentage of creators capture significant earnings, while the majority struggle to sustain themselves.
Creativity as Fuel

Creators themselves become the capital. Their everyday activity continuously generates data that is extracted, analyzed, and reinvested into the system. The rise of AI further intensifies this dynamic—making content easier to produce, but harder to make visible. As a result, creators are pushed to produce more in an environment of increasing saturation and diminishing attention.

What Marx describes as alienation becomes visible here: physically through burnout, socially through competitive visibility, and economically through unstable, algorithm-dependent value.

Keeping Up with the Algorithm

Platform algorithms do not simply change—they redirect how creators think, create, and survive. A minor change in metrics can mean a sudden drop in visibility, income, and relevance. Creativity is no longer guided primarily by ideas or expression, but by the need to remain visible within ever-changing systems.

In this sense, algorithms do not merely evaluate content—they shape it. They quietly redefine what is worth creating in the first place.

And so the cycle continues—where visibility feels like freedom, but often functions as a quieter form of control.
